Husky softball wins 9-4, improves to 7-5 on the season

Talk about a good weekend for the SCSU softball team.

The Huskies hosted Valley City State University, Bemidji State and Dickinson State and finished 3-0, outscoring the teams 27-6.

Sophomore first baseman Kelsie Fitch led the way against Valley City State, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, as the Huskies churned out a 9-4 victory.

Sophomore pitcher Kelly Franks earned the win for SCSU, pitching four innings and accumulating 10 strikeouts.

The Huskies beat the Beavers 14-0 in Saturday’s noon game led by senior shortstop Kelly Olson, who finished 2-for-2 with three RBI.

The Huskies finished the game with 12 hits.

Franks earned another victory, pitching four innings and striking out eight batters.

Saturday’s afternoon game was a little closer, as SCSU beat Dickinson State 4-2 thanks to junior second baseman Breana Canova’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Franks relieved sophomore pitcher Kendra Merritt in the fifth inning to earn the win. Both pitchers struck out five batters.

The Huskies (7-5) will now travel to Florida to play 14 games from March 8 to March 15.
