Spectral silhouettes of the actors enter the stage, loudly whispering, “Stage whispers! Stage whispers! Amateurs!” The lights come on, and the actors fumble for the play’s program to see what they’re supposed to be doing.
This tongue-in-cheek treatment of “The Fantasticks” by Pioneer Place has served the story beautifully. The actors enter and exit through the same door used by the audience and El Gallo, portrayed by Brian Kelly, marches in with the unforgettable first lines of his amazing performance, “Who ordered the number four, no sprouts?” Kelly continues the rest of the performance wearing a sandwich deliverer’s uniform, which becomes a sort of on-going joke.
