MNL Spotlight: Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps featuring Adam Hammer and Friends

Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps along with Adam Hammer and Friends were featured during the home-grown, end-of-the-season Monday Night Live performance.

Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps’ dreamy sounds were shared with the audience at the Pioneer Place.

The Good Night Sleeps sound isn’t the only thing that charmed the audience. Smith’s comedic shtick brought laughs amongst somber melodies and dreamy repasts.

“This song is about loves lost. I was young and I thought I was in love, but we all know how that works out,” said Smith before her song “Strong Shoulders”.

‘Terrorists’ evokes true conflict

Those who made the trip to see the SCSU Theatre’s production, “Talking to Terrorists”, might have been surprised to see a caution sign on the door to the theatre.

The sign read, “Warning! This show contains stories, images, and sounds that could be triggering.”

“Talking to Terrorists” was meant to trigger more than just a reaction to the sights and sounds of the play, but also of thought and questions.

Director Vladimir Rovinsky said it is about raising the question of “is it right to go somewhere with force to defend innocence knowing that innocence will then be injured?” How many innocent people are worth the removal of one evil doer, he then asked.

Student pursues film passion

The tagline for “Lambent Fuse,” a Minnesota-made film, states: “Everybody’s got choices. They just don’t know the outcomes. Make a choice.”

Shot in Minnesota, the film was co-written and produced by David Marketon.

An SCSU senior majoring in meteorology and physics, Marketon has been interested in filmmaking since he saw the movie “Fargo” years ago.

“The writing caught my eye… probably because it was local,” Marketon said.

With writing and producing as his hobbies, he partnered with Matt Cici to create a film and production company.

The House of Pizza, established in 1964 is located in the heart of downtown St. Cloud at 19 Fifth Ave. S. Their is another location in the Pinecone Marketplace in Sartell. This sensational pizza establishment is St. Cloud’s pride and joy and has my mouth watering just thinking about the treat that is in store.

As someone who has grown up in St. Cloud, I remember the taste of the House of Pizza for as long as I can remember. The look and feel of the restaurant has changed over the years due to beautiful new renovations, but their flavor and quality of pizza has not changed one bit.

MNL Spotlight: The Curiously Strong Peppermints

MNL was proud to have The Curiously Strong Peppermints on last week’s show. The Curiously Strong Peppermints brought one-of-a-kind sound to the studio.

“Elliott Smith backed by The Flaming Lips, playing The Beatles backwards,” is how the band describe themselves on Facebook.

The instrumentals and effects sound very similar to The Flaming Lips, but have classic rock undertones. The Beatles playing backwards may be eluding to Jesse Miller’s squeaky, geeky, yet entertaining vocals.

The lyrics are much more important than the vocals themselves, which is something that is hard to digest at first. Overall, the focus of The Curiously Strong Peppermints is on the instrumentals, which are excellent and coordinated.
