Student Government revises Fee Allocation budget to include $5 mil. Atwood renovations

After hours of discussion Student Government voted to submit a revised version of the Fee Allocation budget to President Potter which includes the addition of a $5 million Atwood renovation project.

Spirited debate dominated discussions on the renovation for nearly two hours Thursday night in the Cascade Room of Atwood Memorial Center during the last Student Government meeting of the semester.

Prior to pushing the new budget through, Student Government twice voted down the very budget which was approved last week. Jarrod Wiggins, MSUSA coordinator and president-elect of Student Government, made a motion to submit a new budget to Potter based on the original version of the budget with the inclusion of the $5 million Atwood renovation project.

Chronicle looks at: Aviation department

Students looking to learn to fly are out of luck if they’re also looking to attend SCSU.

The controversial closing of the long-standing program has rippled waves of debate by students and faculty members alike. One thing is clear: As of May 2014, the last students of SCSU’s Aviation Department will be graduating.

The reasons why, however, are not as clear.

History

Aviation has been a part of SCSU since the 1930s, when it began participating in the Federal Civilian Pilot Training program. The United States government sponsored this program and its primary purpose was to increase the number of civilian pilots, having a clear impact on military preparedness.

SG elections: Amisi/Reitan

Why are you running

Amisi

“We actually decided to run later than most people because we realized that the issues that really matter to students weren’t raised. Because we spend time talking about fees, smoking ban, but they’re not the primary goal that we hear. And we wanted people to talk about tuition; we just hit a shortfall with the Pell Grant [and] we wanted to have a discussion to see what we can do and something that can effectively help students afford and sustain the educational progress. This, I think, is one of the main reasons we came up with.”

SG elections: Hassett/Lerdahl

Why are you running?

 Hassett

“I just saw a need for change within the Student Government. I feel that this year wasn’t bad. But I’ve seen a lot of the progress kind of moving towards the administration focus. And it’s kind of like the faculty and the administration says ‘do this’ and they [Student Government] says, ‘OK, lets do this.’ I think us, as a student body, need to have a voice that’s going to stand up for what the students want and what the students need.  And not necessarily fight the administration but be willing to push for issues that are important to the students. And that’s something that I’m very passionate about and I think that the student body should be as well. We need somebody who is going to fight, you know, for student life.”

SG elections: Wiggins/Muerhoff

Why are you running?

Muerhoff

“I wouldn’t run if I wasn’t running with Jarrod. I think as a team we bring so much to the table. We’ve together, collaboratively, on so many projects. I don’t think, if it were a different partner, I would be doing this.”

Wiggins

“I’ve been saying the same thing. We, combined have a little over 4 years of Student Government experience in various roles from senators, to chairs, to the state student association coordinator. We’ve worked closely together, we’ve seen many different issues come up. So we feel we have a kind of a good mix of experience, teamwork and just kind of the skills needed to move us forward.”

SG elections: Garland/Nielsen

Why are you running

Garland

“I think, for us, it’s what we can contribute. Because a big thing for a lot of people when they run they can get it on their resume that they were president. We’re really not looking for that because we’ve already been in the military, we have great resumes already. Myself, I was Disaster Readiness Coordinator in the military and stuff like that, operations specialist, surface warfare coordinator. So I’ve already got the resume thing. It’s more just what we can provide to the campus. Our leadership and really organize Student Government and put them to work is kind of a big thing.”

Shun Jie Yong | Photographer
Performers showcase traditional dances around the arbor.

SCSU’s American Indian Center brings American Indian traditions to college in the only pow-wow which takes place in St. Cloud. The purpose of the AIC is to respond to the self-identified needs and goals of the current American Indian students and communities alike.

“There are so many tribes here in the United States. It’s important to realize the differences and similarities of each tribe,” said Jim Knutson-Kolodzne, director of AIC and member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians. “There’s six hundred different cultures of American Indians here in the United States.”
