(P) (V) Algae power at SCSU

The future of energy is taking place right here in St. Cloud.

In an attempt to create a cheap, renewable source of energy, Tom Byrne and Matt Julius have partnered together to commercialize the use of algae power.

The potential of this energy program is massive. Its costs are low, and unlike fossil fuel, its energy is renewable and sustainable. Since algae power is such a cheap source of energy, it could revolutionize the way the entire world uses energy. Even impoverished nations could afford to run their own algae tanks, giving power to their communities.

The Vikings look to old and new faces for help

It’s been a troubling start for Minnesota this year.

The Vikes are coming off of three tough loses-one to the 49’ers in week one, the Chargers in week three and most recently to the Texans in week four.

For Minnesota fans, a losing streak is something we know all too well.

But winning games may not have been the only thing on the Viking’s mind in the early days of training camp.

Filling key positions might just have been their first priority then.

The Vikings are coming off a 3-13 season, leaving the roster open to changes.

Husky soccer off to exciting start

The Husky soccer team had their opening game Friday against Northwest Missouri State.

The game was anything but boring.

It was a competitive road game for the Huskies.  SCSU and the Bearcats tied 2-2 in double overtime.

The Huskies had 19 shots overall – 14 on goal. The Husky defense was led by 10 saves from goalkeeper, Julia Clifford. Bailly Drayton and Gabby Fleck were the point carriers for the Huskies, both scoring in the second half.  Drayton’s shot was unassisted, while Fleck was assisted by senior teammate, CoCo Cammon.

For Drayton and Fleck, it was the first goals of their collegiate career.

No easy battle for ‘No Easy Day’

A lot of attention has been given to “No Easy Day”, a book that gives first hand account of the mission that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011. The book is scheduled to be released Sept. 4.

Author Mark Owen, pen name of a Navy Seal, has come into contact with some massive heat from the Pentagon before the book has even been released.  There is a lot of questioning as to whether the information found in the book discloses anything that could be labeled as classified. Military officials did not know of the book until the New York Times reported on it on Aug. 22.

SCSU Concert Choir starts a new season

Tentative but soothing freshmen voices were heard from the PAC last Friday as auditions for concert choir were held in the basement. The 200-300 individuals sang a few bars in hopes that they would land one of the 70 spots. After students were welcomed to the audition they then had to match notes on a piano, try some sight singing, and do their best to serenade those listening with “My Country Tis of Thee.”

“We’ve heard it so many times,” chuckled Randy Olsen, president of the choir.

Bike movie is fresh and fun

The context for the recently released “Premium Rush” seems a bit ridiculous if one were to take a step back. It is almost as if Hollywood had said, “Gee, we ran out of ideas for car chase scenes. Now what? Oh I got it! Let’s do it on bicycles!” It’s a pretty valid question of how bicycle stunts could stack up against Ferraris pulling high speed maneuvers, but Premium Rush pulls it off surprisingly well.

Student Government prepares for new year

Chief justice giving his last speech at the Student Government meeting.

The atmosphere in the Cascade Room of Atwood Memorial Center for the first Student Government meeting of the year was one of contrast to the meeting which closed the books on last year’s governing body.

The last meeting of the spring semester lasted over six hours with much of the night dedicated to the discussion of whether to add a $5 million Atwood Renovation to the Fee Allocation budget. In addition to adding the renovation project to the budget, Student Government also passed a new set of bylaws for the Senate Finance Committee.
