Student pursues film passion

The tagline for “Lambent Fuse,” a Minnesota-made film, states: “Everybody’s got choices. They just don’t know the outcomes. Make a choice.”

Shot in Minnesota, the film was co-written and produced by David Marketon.

An SCSU senior majoring in meteorology and physics, Marketon has been interested in filmmaking since he saw the movie “Fargo” years ago.

“The writing caught my eye… probably because it was local,” Marketon said.

With writing and producing as his hobbies, he partnered with Matt Cici to create a film and production company.

“Our company is called Stolen Arrow Films and we started it on our own,” he said.

John Carter sure to astound movie fans

“John Carter” is a science fiction/action/comedy about a former military captain, John Carter, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he hesitantly becomes enmeshed in a culture collision. During his extended stay on Mars, Carter meets and befriends a variety of aliens and creatures of all kinds.

To return back to Earth, he must become a hero on Mars by saving the foreign alien-kind. Not only does he help them but he also gives the world hope, something to believe in, and most of all, a successful victory in reinstating their power.

Seuss’ imagination, a Lorax journey

The animated movie, “The Lorax,” is based on the imaginative children’s book by the beloved author, Dr. Seuss.

Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax” stars the young actors Taylor Swift and Zac Efron who provide the voices for the main characters, Audrey and Ted.

The illustrated imagination of Dr. Seuss is brought to life in the real world in the “The Lorax”.

“The Lorax” tells the tale of a fictionally plastic world and its unique people.

‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ sure to entertain

“The Secret World of Arrietty” is an animated Japanese film. “The Secret World of Arrietty” has been dubbed in English and re-released in America. The American Disney version of the action/fantasy film holds the voice talents of the Disney stars Bridgit Mendler, David Henrie and Moises Arias, and features the comedians Gracie Morre Poletti, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett and Will Arnett.

“The Secret World of Arrietty” is based on the award-winning novel “The Borrowers”. The main character, Arrietty, and her family are Borrowers. The Borrowers are small people who borrow small things that people don’t need and won’t notice if they’re gone. Arrietty is an adventurous, smart, spunky tenacious teenage girl. Shawn is a kind, smart, logical, sensitive teenage boy.

‘Big Miracle’ inspires viewers

“Big Miracle” is a drama film based on a 1989 novel, “Freeing the Whales” by Tom Rose that was inspired by a true story that united the world.

“Big Miracle” narrates the motivational story of a sudden discovery of three breath-taking gray whales fighting against all odds to stay alive. Initially their only supporters were a small town news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer to help them along their brave and seemingly impossible journey through the Arctic Ocean.

The majestic whales were named Fred, Wilma, and Bam-Bam by a young American boy.

‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close’ movie review

“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a drama film based on the award-winning novel of the same title. The exceptional novel was written by Jonathan Safran Foer and was published in 2005.

Recounting the 9/11 events and its aftermath, the story of “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is told from a child’s viewpoint. A beloved man’s death during the execrable 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center leaves behind his distraught wife and his confused, only son.

The narrator and main character, Oskar Schell is remembering the luminescent decade his father spent with him until his sudden death and funeral.

‘Muppets’ come back to mixed reviews

Anyone from the 1970s, 1980s and kids from the 1990s will remember the gang of puppets from “The Muppet Show.” It aired for five seasons from 1976 until 1981, and generated many spinoffs.

Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Bobo the Bear, Gonzo, Dr. Teeth, Rowlf the Dog, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Sam the Eagle, Walter, Scooter, Janice, Floyd Pepper, Crazy Harry, Camilla, Sweetums, ‘80s Robot, Beaker, Statler, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Zoot, and Waldorf are all back in an all-new, 21st century-updated, live-action, family comedy “The Muppets.”

The movie is a mixed parody of various movies including itself. The film’s director and producers work to satirize movie musicals.

‘Puss in Boots’ appeals to all

“Puss in Boots” is a computer-animated action comedy movie and like numerous cartoon films, appeals to viewers of all ages. “Puss in Boots” is the latest movie in the Shrek spin-off series. The Shrek series satires classic fairytales. Shrek fans enjoy the comical satire and the whimsical characters.

The fourth installment in the Shrek spin-off series is in fact a prequel to the Shrek series called “Puss in Boots”. “Puss in Boots” is about the infamous outlaw in his own memorable adventure providing a fundamental story to the noteworthy bandit’s character prior to and in the Shrek series.

“I Don’t Know How She Does It” is a movie many mothers can relate to. The wonderment of how mothers manage to do everything and still look good a majority of the time is mystery to all as even some mothers don’t know how they make it all come together. They take care of and help their children and husbands, do various household chores, cook the meals, and have their own career.

‘Dolphin Tale’ shares heartwarming, inspiring story

“Dolphin Tale” is a heartwarming film inspired by an amazing true story. It is a story about a dolphin’s fight for survival and a boy, with some help from family, friends, and animal trainers surpass all obstacles to keep their animal friend alive.

A young bottlenose dolphin, Winter, is rescued off the Florida coast, and the Clearwater Marine Hospital takes her in and must amputate her tail to save her life.

With her inability to swim, her chances for survival seem small even with the replacement of a prosthetic tail. Winter surprises all with her determination and faith. The survival of the dolphin is an unimaginable miracle and a phenomenal true story.
