SG elections: Amisi/Reitan

Why are you running

Amisi

“We actually decided to run later than most people because we realized that the issues that really matter to students weren’t raised. Because we spend time talking about fees, smoking ban, but they’re not the primary goal that we hear. And we wanted people to talk about tuition; we just hit a shortfall with the Pell Grant [and] we wanted to have a discussion to see what we can do and something that can effectively help students afford and sustain the educational progress. This, I think, is one of the main reasons we came up with.”

SG elections: Hassett/Lerdahl

Why are you running?

 Hassett

“I just saw a need for change within the Student Government. I feel that this year wasn’t bad. But I’ve seen a lot of the progress kind of moving towards the administration focus. And it’s kind of like the faculty and the administration says ‘do this’ and they [Student Government] says, ‘OK, lets do this.’ I think us, as a student body, need to have a voice that’s going to stand up for what the students want and what the students need.  And not necessarily fight the administration but be willing to push for issues that are important to the students. And that’s something that I’m very passionate about and I think that the student body should be as well. We need somebody who is going to fight, you know, for student life.”

SG elections: Wiggins/Muerhoff

Why are you running?

Muerhoff

“I wouldn’t run if I wasn’t running with Jarrod. I think as a team we bring so much to the table. We’ve together, collaboratively, on so many projects. I don’t think, if it were a different partner, I would be doing this.”

Wiggins

“I’ve been saying the same thing. We, combined have a little over 4 years of Student Government experience in various roles from senators, to chairs, to the state student association coordinator. We’ve worked closely together, we’ve seen many different issues come up. So we feel we have a kind of a good mix of experience, teamwork and just kind of the skills needed to move us forward.”

SG elections: Garland/Nielsen

Why are you running

Garland

“I think, for us, it’s what we can contribute. Because a big thing for a lot of people when they run they can get it on their resume that they were president. We’re really not looking for that because we’ve already been in the military, we have great resumes already. Myself, I was Disaster Readiness Coordinator in the military and stuff like that, operations specialist, surface warfare coordinator. So I’ve already got the resume thing. It’s more just what we can provide to the campus. Our leadership and really organize Student Government and put them to work is kind of a big thing.”

Similar passions shared at poetry night

A collection of students, staff, faculty members, and members of the community gathered in the library to share their similar passion for poetry on Wednesday.

Attendees coming in were welcomed by the faces of Chris Inkster and Jennifer Quinlan, members of the committee who organized this poetry-reading event. Keith Ewing was also a part of the committee, but was absent on a trip to Europe.

Planning for the event began in the fall.

“Keith and I were at a poetry reading… at St. Ben’s and when we were out we met Joyce [Sutphen], and Keith thought it’d be a great idea to have some poetry reading here,” Quinlan said.

City looks to attract new airline to airport

The city of St. Cloud’s effort to attract a new commercial airline remains on the top of the city’s priority list. Despite a major decrease in traffic at the airport due to the closing of SCSU’s aviation program, St. Cloud Regional Airport and the city of St. Cloud have been working diligently to overcome the odds and bring an airline back to St. Cloud.

“The more the airport is used, the more funding we are able to receive from the FAA,” said Bill Towle, director of the St. Cloud Regional Airport. “Without these funds, it is hard to maintain certain things, such as runways and then we’ll have to turn to the city or the region and ask them for funds.”

A Taste of St. Cloud: Val’s Rapid Serv

Val’s Rapid Serve is located at 628 East St. Germain Street, St. Cloud MN.  It is right behind Hwy 10 and off Highway 23. Val Henning opened the establishment in 1959 and sold it to his sons Bill and Dave Henning in 1979.

When I first drive up to Val’s it looks as though I’m looking at a run down 1950s restaurant that is trying to compete with modern day big wigs of the fast food industry. No drive through, and a old beat up sign telling you something cooking inside place has to be special for this burger joint to still be around.

Rugby team may not be well-known

Everyone knows SCSU has a bunch of fantastic Division I and II sports teams, such as hockey, football and basketball.

But what many students and other people may not know is that the school’s rugby team is just as cool as the others.

The rugby team, known as the SCSU Fighting Carp, was established over 40 years ago. They play in the Midwest Division II Collegiate Bracket with teams from places such as Duluth, Winona, Bethel, St. Johns, and Mankato.

When asked about what he liked about the team the most, team president Mark Papko said, “The camaraderie for sure. Everyone is friends with everyone, making friendships that last a life time.”
